In summary

Heron Lakes Golf Club is highly praised for its well-maintained courses, particularly the challenging Great Blue and the more accessible Greenback, both offering picturesque settings and reasonable pricing as municipal courses. Many appreciate the friendly staff and amenities, including quality food and rental equipment. However, some visitors express concerns about slow pace of play, noise from the nearby race track, and occasional issues with course conditions like bunkers and layout challenges.

My first time ever going golf I’d highly recommend this place! A friend and I played the back 9 on the green side! Best experience ever!!! Thank you guys for making it such a great first time! Will definitely be back for range time and other golf activities! Best sandwich I’ve ever eaten too!

Hands down the best municipal golf courses around. The green back is heavily wooded and "easier." While the great blue course is much more challenging with water on most holes. The blue course is along the best match play golf courses in Oregon!

I love Great Blue. Played in mid January. Given the time of year and how much rain we've had the course was in really good shape, especially the greens. But I have to ding them for the bunkers. Its time to order some sand. But all in all Kudos to the team at Heron Lakes.

This is one of my favorite golf courses in the area. Best value during peak season, really nice staff, delicious food and beer too. It’s always a great day on the course out here.

I swear Great Blue could be one of the best courses in the region if it got a little more funding from the city to keep it in shape. Great golf course regardless. The layout is soooo good.

Me and my three friends are pretty new to golf and it was my birthday so we decided to give this course a try. We got there and front desk showed us where to go. We got the the first tee and teed off and then after going to our balls, we got hit with a course ranger saying we were holding up other people or playing too slow?we then had to play way faster which was horrible cause we have only been playing for about 5 months. The rest of the course we were unbothered and ended up being kind of fun, but the first couple holes after the cart ranger bugged us and was being rude ruined the whole mor…

Played Greenback and found it pretty challenging. Water hazards on many of the holes and a lot of greens surrounded by bunkers. If you play during sunrise bring extra balls as I had a hell of a time finding mine due to plugged lies in fairway and rough.

The course is in great shape. We played Big blue and the back 9 was challenging, especially 16,17 and 18th holes. Scorecard killers, and good strike and roll.....it's wet.

We played the green side on Saturday and was disappointed. While the course was in overall good shape and the price was very reasonable for Saturday golf, the pace of play and noise level was insane. The one time we actually saw a Marshall was on the 15th green. When he asked how things were going we said it was very slow (often waiting 10 minutes to tee off), he just goes "slow huh?" And just kept driving. Outside of that the noise level was stupid. Outside of multiple trains coming through, not so bad, but it's right by PIR (Portland International Speedway). The sound is heard from everywhe…

There are two 18 hole courses, Greenback and Great Blue. The former is slightly shorter and flatter while the latter requires much more skills. I like both of them, but if you like challenges, I would play Great Blue, which has hosted US Amateur. They are City of Portland municipal courses, so they are reasonable in price, but the fairways are not as pristine as private courses in Portland. As far as I know, there are no frost or fog delays. Both of them are quite walkable, but electric carts are available. I would say #18 on Great Blue is the signature hole and #13 for Greenback.

We had amazing time at both courses here. Blue is little more challenging, it seemed there are more hazards. Greens are fast and in top shape. Really enjoyed walking, it felt like a big park.

My favorite city course in Portland. Greenback is super friendly, especially if you have a propensity to hit a fade off the tee box. Great blue will kick your ass, but it’s a fun links style course.
