In summary

Ohio University Golf Course is praised for its scenic setting and unique layout, including the opportunity to hit over the Hocking River. However, many visitors express dissatisfaction with the course's maintenance, citing overgrown rough, unplayable bunkers, and poorly managed greens. There are also concerns about the lack of amenities, such as a driving range, and the management of tee times and course conditions.

Disappointed and Would Not Return My son and I stopped at Ohio University Golf Course while traveling from Illinois to North Carolina, hoping for a quick and enjoyable round. While the practice greens looked promising, the actual course was in very poor shape. The rough was severely overgrown, and the bunkers were dried out and overrun with weeds—clearly not maintained for quite some time. We paid for 18 holes, only to realize mid-round that it’s just a 9-hole course. No refund was offered, nor was there any gesture to make up for the experience. The front desk staff were polite, but it’s cl…

Bike Path is very beautiful place to walk or ride a bicycle near the river lake. So peaceful place to sit and read or listen to music or just watch and feel the life Here people are walking around and it gives you the sense of life.

Fairways and greens are in pretty good shape but any ball hit outside the fairway is severely penalized by heavy primary rough and encroaching native areas. The expanded native areas virtually guarantee a lost ball and have eliminated any safe bailout areas even around the greens. The bunkers remain unplayable - several are water traps after any amount of rain. There is very little margin of error for any errant ball. Given the number of students and locals that play the course this all contributes to slower play and a frustrating round of golf. It is pretty clear that anyone that manages the…

Wish I could give zero stars. Played the course with my 3 adult children. My daughter is a student at the university. Absolute disaster of a course. If you miss the fairway by 2 feet you will not find your ball because the native growth is so overgrown. The Bunkers were either full of water or bare dirt not sand. Some greens are just dirt as well. Horrible horrible course. The university should be embarrassed to have their name associated with something that awful.

Played the course this afternoon and it is a mess. The grass on the fairways is thin or nonexistent. Tee boxes are worse. Devoid of grass on 90% of them. The native grasses in the rough are out of control (those have to be maintained for healthy growth, btw - not just left to lay over and build up dead organic material year after year). Cart paths were in terrible shape and need repaving in many places. The putting greens are disastrously mismanaged with bald spots and inconsistency of roll. Looked like they had not been cut in 3 days. I will say that, my father taught me to fix a ball mark wh…

Fun 9 hole layout with potential. Still maybe the only golf course I've ever seen where you can hit a tee shot over a real, natural river (the Hocking). Greens are in good shape. I'm enjoying the recent changes as a somewhat more seasoned player, but I can see how newer players would be frustrated as theres almost no room for a big miss anymore with the new native areas. Kind of weird though, they basically redid the entire course but not the bunkers, they are still terrible as ever. In my opinion, OU is sitting on/missing a big opportunity, theres almost no public golf in the region but ther…

Unfortunately the tee times meant nothing as players were simply showing up and playing. They only had 5 holes open and so some groups were coming around to tee off on their second five holes. A starter was needed to handle this. There were two people attending the desk but no one to ensure that the play was smooth. Things to improve on.

Nice little course to hop on and play. The two students running the clubhouse were so wonderful after I tore my glove and trying to find a band-aid large enough so I could continue. The only concern is the covid rules are a bit stiff with changes on their site quite often. Otherwise, it flows pretty well and for a nice open course it plays challenging enough.

July 2025- the course is walking only even for seniors in 90 degree weather. The University no longer is putting any effort toward golf as a sport. The driving range is permanently closed as well.

If I could give this place negative stars I would. My experience at the course was terrible, just pitiful. Me and my buddies (3 of us) went to play a round of 9 holes at the course. We paid for our carts and green fees and were just about to tee off when the course ranger (about 70 years of age, dude lives to ruin kids fun) came and told us that we couldn't all play out of just one bag. The course was already backed up and it's not like more than one person at a time could hit anyway. After pleading with the ranger for a few minutes he still refused to let us play. Lost our money because grand…

They’ve raised the rates so that prices are similar to Central Ohio courses. However, Central Ohio courses have a larger population of golfers and the cost goes towards maintenance of the courses. I feel the maintenance of Ohio University Golf Course is below average and the raised rates are not for supporting the necessary up keep of the course and facility. Rather, they raised the rates because it’s the only course in Athens and they know the regular golfers will pay that amount to play. Additionally, the pro shop has very little merchandise and they don’t have bottles of water or Gatorade a…

Played the course this past Saturday, apparently the University has decided not to maintain or invest in the future of the golf course. It is in terrible condition, the club house no drinks or merchandise. What a shame, OU is lucky to have a resource with such potential yet is completely ignored?
