In summary

Makani Golf Club is praised for its unique and challenging course layout, spectacular views, and friendly staff. Many visitors appreciate the cooler temperatures and the scenic setting, including the standout island hole on the 17th. However, some guests mention the need for better course maintenance, improved organization of tee times, and the lack of certain amenities like a beverage cart and updated carts.

The course was decent overall, but it would really benefit from additional watering and improved maintenance. Some areas felt a bit neglected, which took away from the overall experience. With a little more attention to detail, this could be a really enjoyable place to play.

Enjoyable experience while on the big island. A bit more expensive than what I was expecting since many sites pointing to the course indicated that a small bucket of balls was included. I rented clubs and no game balls were included (many club rentals I've done come with game balls, usually two sleeves). This is my first Hawaiian course play. Course was in decent shape, fairways had plenty of carry. The greens were fair. Staff was quite helpful. Not as much ocean scenery along the course as some of the marketing leads one to believe. The course is fun to play with plenty of dog legs, undulatin…

Nice course that’s challenging. However, seems like they give priority to people who are seasoned and experienced, im new to golf and I want to experience the different courses on the island. But I guess it’s an issue if you’re new and taking a little bit more time to hit and go through the course. Mauna Kea or Volcano golf course are more forgiving than this course. I don’t recommend it.

Slightly out of touch golf place. The pro shop is run down and hot as ever. There was a giant line with the two women working at the pro shop and the one person decides now is a great time to tally up the value of all of the coins in the register blowing 5 minutes at 6 groups are trying to check in. The people who give you the carts were gentlemen and scholars total opposite. The course is fun challenging and has some incredible views. Hole 17 is amazing with the green on an island!

First time here but won't be my last. Absolute hidden gem with cool temperatures and great views in the high country. Only 6600 yards from the tips but can be challenging if you're not hitting 'em straight. Jim the starter and the rest of the staff were great. Looks like there's a lot of work and improvements going on as the lake on 18 was drained and being worked on. Their signature island hole on 17 was picture perfect. No beverage cart so stock up in the pro shop. As far as my round, I was conservative never played there before hitting a mix of irons, 3 wood and driver off the tee on par 4'…

Nice course and staff overpriced club rentals. I chose the more expensive Cleveland clubs to rent. Driver light as a feather had to switch to the 3 wood which was much better off the tee. No sand wedge which was ridiculous. Luckily my local playing partner let me use his when needed. Also, no towel provided with club rentals. Definitely not worth the . cost was bitter off renting the lower cost Titlelist set which I later found out had a sand wedge. My advice is to just rent the Titleist. Had a great time regardless.

This review is written out of love for the beautiful scenery up in the mountains, the quirky and mostly fun course layout, and the nice staff. My two frustrations with playing at Makani were: 1. The tee times were unorganized in terms of timing and group size, which led to a backed up and slow round. 3 groups of varying sizes were stacked per hole for the majority of 18. 2. Mandatory carts. I politely asked to walk and was not allowed to. This is not unique to Makani, but is a big frustration for me on golf courses. I find that walking contributes to the enjoyment of the game and allows for…

First-timer. Course was in great shape, greens were very fast - for me, a muni player! Plenty of great scenery, but I spent most of my time looking at fairways instead of grabbing my camera. Best part? All the beautiful Nene's! I will be back!

This course requires a bit of course knowledge. Starting with the first hole all the way to #18. Now that I've played it once, it'll probably help next time. The course was in great shape and is very challenging. The only negative is that the carts need an update. The seat in mine was ripping and there is no GPS. Knowing that, I brought my rangefinder. I will definitely come back and play this course again. I used golfnow and paid $20 less for here than I paid at Hapuna. Note: Bring your rain gear and umbrella. It rained, but only on three or four holes - it wasn't too bad.

First time playing this course and absolutely loved it. The course was in very good condition and the greens ran true with some tricky pin placements. The setting is spectacular and the staff very friendly and welcoming. I’ll be back for sure.

Wow! Such a beautiful course. One of a kind for surroundings and tropical trees and plants. Highly recommend. Fun course as well. Wide open but challenging.

We tried this course in December 2017 as an alternative to the resort courses. The staff was very friendly and the layout was fun and different. Didn't see as many peacocks as we hoped, and the condition was a step down from more expensive courses on the island, but it was still fun and challenging. Love the island green on 17. And the views were nice.
