In summary

Makalei Golf Club is praised for its unique mountain layout, offering stunning views and a challenging experience with significant elevation changes. The staff is frequently commended for their friendliness and hospitality, and the presence of wildlife, particularly peacocks, adds to the course's charm. However, some visitors note that the course maintenance could be improved, with issues such as weeds and inconsistent roughs, and there are occasional concerns about the condition of the golf carts and the potential for rain.

Course was a lot different than we’ve had ever played on before. Staff is great a beautiful peacocks it did rain a little bit where we’re on the course. Definitely need a golf cart. Lotta hills would absolutely go back again.

Staff are lovely, no question! However I cannot in good conscience recommend this course. It is poorly maintained, there is a lot of clover so you’ll lose a lot of balls and our golf cart started to kick in and out around 16. This mountain course is unique and challenging with a lot of potential with a major infusion of capital. If you decide to play there just bring a lot of junk balls. 😂 peacocks can be aggressive if they think you’re going to feed them… don’t.

I thoroughly enjoyed Makalei Golf Club! Amazing holes! Launching the ball up and down beautiful hills. Breathtaking views. Challenging throughout! I'm grateful for this unique experience overlooking Kona. Wow!

Great track. Greens were perfect. Course is not maintained at top notch level, however the course is fun to play. You get what you pay for.

Overall very happy we played here and thought it was well worth the price, which is awesome for tourists visiting Hawaii that might not want to shell out big money for every round, especially if you find their coupon at the airport. It’s challenging (but not overly so) and a very interesting round, but you should not go here expecting resort-like conditions. If you don’t, I think you’ll really enjoy your round. Crazy ocean views from up above, lots of elevation changes, and beautiful holes. The drive from the clubhouse to the driving range and first tee is long through the lush woods and give…

The worst imaginable staff. One golf cart staff was unaware of policy for bird watching and sent us to long line at the pro shop. No staff could see our obvious camera, scope and binocular gear to watchbirds. When we got to the cashier he asked what we wanted to do. We replied just watch birds in any way that was safe and out of the way. And would pay golf course fees. No, we don't allow that, he replied and gave no reasons. Of course I would never golf there and will never go there again.

A great experience. First time playing a mountain course and the incline and decline of the holes was very interesting. Some holes had a distant ocean view. The large amount of peacocks and other wildlife was an added attraction. Very beautiful. The staff there was super friendly and helpful. Quick time to check in and get your cart. The cart trip to driving range/1st hole is about a 10 minute ride. The driving range faces the ocean and is sloped downhill. The only reason I didn’t rate a star higher is that the golf carts are very much in need of replacement. However, it was posted in the p…

If I could give the course more than 5 stars, I would. We played this course twice during our two week visit to the Big Island in August . The course is under new ownership and much work is being done in weed control and a new clubhouse was being built. The course is long and wide and you are either playing up the mountain or down. The views are truly spectacular and with so many trees a lot of shade for those hot days. My son and I played this first, and then rebooked a second round as we liked it so much and the value for money was unbeatable . on our second round, we had 6 golfers as we wer…

A no frills golf course which is VERY fun to play. It’s not nearly as nicely manicured as some of the other courses on the island, but it is priced accordingly and has its own charm. The logo is a peacock and for good reason. You will see multiple peacocks on every hole. There are breathtaking views since this is high up the mountain, and there’s tons of wildlife. Playing here almost doubles as a mini safari. I recommend playing here, especially if you’re looking for a fun casual round of golf. A word of caution - go in the morning. It can get rainy from time to time in the afternoon. We got…

Nice course with wonderful staff. Lots of peacocks on the course. Drive those carts safely as the hills are steep! Supposedly one of the most, if not THE MOST difficult courses in Hawaii state.

Price is right for this course. Hard to get employees attention. Weeds all over the fairways, and zero concern there is a golf cart in the middle of a pond. The same pond that tens of fish belly up assuming the cart had something to do with it. When I was trying to return my SHORT club rentals I had to listen to Lori (I think) talk on the phone about how she could easily make 6 figures in the logistics field if she left. Only reason why I gave 2 stars is how fun and challenging the course was. If you don't mind poor up keep on the course, this is the place for you!

The course has so much potential. The layout and the views/wild life are exceptional. The conditions were horrendous. Fairways were literally the worst I’ve ever seen and greens and tee boxes not much better. The staff were nice and the starter was great.
