In summary

Black Bear Golf Resort has received high praise for its well-maintained course, challenging layout, and friendly, attentive staff. The recent improvements under new ownership have been noted, including the scenic setting and unique features like the practice par-3 hole. While the vast majority of feedback is positive, with many appreciating the enhanced amenities and events, there is a rare mention of dissatisfaction regarding the course's past condition. Overall, the resort is considered a standout destination in northern Michigan for both casual and seasoned golfers.

Had a great time golfing this course. Very well maintained and true. Healthy greens and bunkers. New owners purchased 1-2 years ago and have made huge improvements. Owners interactive with patrons. Staff was very friendly and prepared. They also do events at the golf course, for example their 2nd annual Bourbon Color Tour, while I was not an attendee of their event, stations were setup across multiple holes for everyone to purchase from. Station Attendees were professional, courteous and knowledgeable of the liquor they were selling. I highly recommend this course to novice and skilled golfers…

Played this course in September of 25. Course is well kept and the staff was super welcoming and helpful. The food was great and the drinks were cold. Very impressive selection of bourbon for Northern Michigan as well. I will be back as I very much enjoyed this course and the customer experience.

Bought these rounds on Group Golfer… seeing it is under new ownership, and with all the past bad reviews… I figured we would wait till the end of summer, to see what the new owners would do! I can’t describe how good of shape this course is in! Everything is top notch… friendly staff and very challenging. I wouldn’t have thought, not even one season of a new ownership could pull this off this quickly! Excellent gob! I could definitely see the price is going up really soon

I played 3 years ago, the course was junk. Played today 9/15/25. What a total turn around. Great job new owners and grounds crew. Will definitely be back again.

Black Bear golf course has some unique features to its course. Starting with the 19th hole. It is your first hole and it is a great opportunity to get your legs under you to start your round for the day. It is the first hole you see and is a practice par three. Wonderful idea!!! They have many great holes on the course but my favorite is the finishing hole which is a slight dog leg left that has a multi level green with an approach shot that has to clear the water in front. It is a fun finishing hole to this course!!!

If you are like me, you are reading all of these reviews, and you are likely questioning if it makes sense to go play this course. I definitely understand where your concern is coming from, however, I would challenge you to have an open mind so you can experience a great golf course that just needs a little TLC. My family and I had the chance to play this course on 8/9/2023 and our expectations were definitely low. We arrived early and were the only car in the parking lot outside of the owner Rick, who literally is running everything and is one of the nicest, hospitable people I have ever dea…

Black Bear Golf Course was awesome stop on my up to the upper peninsula. The owner was really gracious to let me and my furry golfing companion play at BBGC Course was beautiful, layout was even better, greens rolled well, tee boxes and fairways in good condition. Will definitely try and revisit again.

My buddies and I played Black Bear yesterday, October 12th, 2025 and unanimously thought it was awesome, even better than Black Lake which we played the day before. Greens had been plugged and filled and 90% healed so we missed a couple of putts we probably would have made but no one complained. The course and views were great, Olivia the owner checked us in and could not have been more friendly and helpful. Our group gives it 5 stars ***** and we will be back many times.

What a beautiful course! Challenging in all the right ways. We went September 2025 and the course was in excellent condition. The food was also fantastic. We will definitely be back!

I purchased a GroupGolfer.com voucher in the spring of 2025. In August 2025, I finally had the time available to make it to the course. This is a very scenic golf course that has a true “Up North” feel. Over the years, I have passed by this golf course on Interstate 75 countless times, with a little bit of curiosity each time. The staff were great, the course was in excellent condition and the beer was cold. We met a member while on the course—and he said the course went into disrepair some years ago. I can confirm that isn’t the case now. The current team is putting a lot of work into the c…

Went here 8/22/24 with a 4 some for a group golfer coupon, and the course didn't disappoint. Greens look amazing and play great. Tee boxes were in great shape. Fairway cut was a little longer than what we were used to, but that didn't affect play at all. Overall, it was a great course. Would definitely come back to play this northern Michigan gem again.
