What People Say

In summary

Ole Monterey Golf Club offers beautiful views and a well-laid-out course, with some players appreciating the overall value and friendly staff. However, many visitors express concerns about the course's maintenance, citing issues with the greens, fairways, and rough, which they feel do not justify the current pricing. Some also mention that certain course areas, like the bunkers and tee boxes, require significant improvement.

While Ole Monterey has never been known as one of the nicest courses in the Roanoke area, my round today confirmed that it has now become an absolute dump. The greens are atrocious (I am including a photo of one of the “better” greens that I could find along with one of a “typical” green). Most of them have large bare patches and sand areas. There is a decent amount of crabgrass in addition to the pitiful looking grass. A well-struck shot may hold the green or bounce many feet in the air. Rarely was there a line to the hole that contained all grass, like any normal green, so good luck putting.…

Stay away from this golf course. It’s not worth your time or money. I’ve played many courses all across the East Coast, and I didn’t even know a golf course could get this bad. The clubhouse looks rundown, the rough is so long you can barely find your ball, let alone enjoy the round if you land in it, the fairways are cut basically the same length as my lawn at home, the bunkers are just weeds no sand what so ever, and the greens are in such bad shape that reading them is pointless. To make it even better hole #13 is closed because the green is so bad and they didn’t even tell us until we paid…

I played Ole Monterey on 10/25/25 and was really let down by the overall condition of the course. The greens were in very poor shape, patchy and inconsistent. The only thing I can compare the roll on the greens to is a plinko board. They didn't appear to have been recently punched, however so the roll was simply due to being in poor shape, making putting a frustrating experience. On top of that, the fairways and rough were overwhelmed with crabgrass, which made it feel more like a neglected public park than a golf course. For the price they charge ($52), I expected a much higher level of maint…

Great course. If you’re going to miss, miss left off of the tees! Almost got hit twice by golfers on adjacent holes. One guy actually managed to hit the top of our golf cart from 180 yards away which scared me pretty good, but thankfully we weren’t injured. I have played this course probably 15 times. It’s a lot of fun. I always see deer on hole 16. Great place to play and very affordable. Beautiful views of the Wells Fargo tower and the mountains. It’s next to Blue Hills golf course also. On hole 13 I think you could walk through the woods and be at the green of home number 4 in blue hills.

Awful experience. Rates went up but shape of course went down. Only one green on the entire course that was in good shape. Hit several balls down the middle only to find the grass 6-8 " high. Weeds around tee boxes. Definitely a locals course. Pay a little extra and go to Blue Hills. Auburn Hills in Riner is Excellent and the same price! Very disappointed

⭐ 1 out of 5 stars Disappointed with Course Conditions vs. Price I recently played Ole Monterey Golf Course in Roanoke, and unfortunately, the experience didn’t match the price point. For what they charge, I expected a well-maintained course—but what I got was far from it. - Rough Conditions: The rough was so overgrown it bordered on unplayable. Every group around us spent 10–15 minutes searching for balls after perfectly reasonable shots. It felt more like a 25/75 chance of finding your ball, which slows down play and kills the rhythm of the round. - First Cut & Fairways: The first cut was…

Don't typically leave reviews but the course was in surprisingly good shape for this time of year, mid-February and I felt like I owed it to the course. The views were the best of all the courses I've played in the Roanoke area. I think I payed around $25 and would expect to normally pay $45-65 for a similar course. For the value, I will definitely be back. I'm the type of person where if the greens are in decent shape, I don't really care about the rest of the course. I was pleased with the greens and the rest of the course was very acceptable. It was very windy and pretty chilly out so the…

$40 on the weekend. Nice new carts, but very bumpy paths and the course itself was mediocre in terms of maintenance. I'd look elsewhere until they lower their prices to match the overall quality. At least, I will. Update years later- still mediocre and not maintained

The greens were in great shape. The course was very nicely layed out. My only complaint is the grass in and along the fairways need to be kept cut better.

Played here7-27-25, please do not go near this Disaster! Although to my understanding not the rmployees fault this once respected coarse is a version of a cow pasture at the moment! The employess did inform me of some mower issues before i played and payed. Once we play the 1st hole or 2 it was obvious that coarse maintenance has been completely ignored for some time! At the low low price of 52$ a round you can see 6 to 8 inch at the low points of rough, overgrown with grass sand traps, over grown braches in the cart paths, tee boxes and fairways that haven't been mowed, greens with disease an…

Do not waste your money, this course is a total wreck right now! Maintenance has been completely disregarded, as the greens are 50% dirt, and the fairways are like the rough on your average course. We lost 2 balls in the middle of the fairway and countless others that were just off the fairway in the rough. It's really a shame as this used to be a decent course, but current ownership has really let this devolve into an unplayable dog track.

The course layout is great but the conditions of the course are very poor. Unless a beginner I would not waste your time and money at this course. Greens were terrible, not one sand trap is kept clean and lost balls that were hit in the middle of fairway due to the tall grass. Honestly should not be open in its current state.
