What People Say

In summary

Royal New Kent is widely praised for its unique and visually stunning design by Mike Strantz, offering a challenging and memorable golf experience with its links-style layout, undulating fairways, and numerous pot bunkers. The course is generally well-maintained, with staff noted for their friendliness and attentiveness. However, some visitors have mentioned issues with slow pace of play and occasional lapses in course conditions, particularly during dry spells.

One of the most unique, beautiful, and outrageous courses I've played on the East Coast. A Mike Strantz fever dream. We played in early November and the course was in immaculate condition. So many blind shots, winding "fairways," and the natural environment incorporated beautifully. Worth the trip!

Tough layout. Cart path only which made for a long arduous day. Two birdies made it more enjoyable. Starter never told us cart path only but carts kept you off the fairways. Range closed too. Jessica at bar was great.

Nearly cancelled my tee time when I saw the course slope rating, but sure glad I didn’t! The course was by far the toughest I’ve ever played (16 handicap) but the most enjoyable. I used nearly every club in my bag and had to think through every shot. While not a classically beautiful and green fairway track ( I did play in February) it had its own unique beauty. The staff was awesome! I was a solo woman golfer and they welcomed me as if I was a dear friend! I Can’t say enough about the entire experience. I will definitely be back and can’t wait to take another run at it!

Royal New Kent is the most visually stunning and challenging course I’ve played to date. The course was designed by Mike Strantz and is a tribute to the links style courses found in Ireland. The layout is extremely difficult and features wide undulating fairways, more than 100 deep and rugged pot bunkers, severely sloping multi tiered greens, and thick fescue rough that is sure to swallow errant shots. The conditions of the course were amazing and the staff were very polite making for one of the most memorable rounds of golf I’ve ever had.

This place is a great golf experience. I played here on Wednesday and the greens were, by far, the best I've played on this year. The Bermuda grass fairways were also lush and provided great lies for iron shots. The visuals from the tee boxes are spectacular...Stranz at his best. It's a tough but fair challenge and well worth it!!

Beautiful, one of a kind place in Virginia.. dont look around, just trust your yardage. You really do feel like you are playing in another country in a differnet era, its really cool. Staff was friendly, attentive and helpful, nice practice area and putting, chipping greens. Food is better than most for golf courses (above par). Could use a little more help with getting around the course with more yardage markers or a more helpful detailed scorecard or just throw a yardage book in the cart. Carts, tees, fairways, greens were all in great shape. Very nice clubhouse and bar area, outdoor patio t…

I decided to play RNK a day before I was going to play Tobacco Road and wow both courses are super hard and absolutely VISUALLY STUNNING!!!!!! You can immediately see the similarities in design, both being just amazing, Strandz' vision is unlike any others'. I loved playing RNK this time of year as well, with the grass having those winter brown hues, gave the course a completely different look, which I think is amazing. A common theme I felt throughout the course was generous fairways, that put you into blind shots if you do not hit a perfect tee shot. 8 and 14 were perfect examples of that ,…

Had a chance to play at Royal New Kent today. The course is between Richmond and Williamsburg, VA. For those of you who are Strantz fans, you're probably already familiar with it. For those who are not, you'd probably just as soon avoid the course. But I LOVE what Strantz did with golf course design. The guy is to golf, what Picasso was to painting. He had a unique vision and approach, and we went with it for all it was worth. RNK is never going to be praised for its conditioning. But for the setting in which it lies, I give kudos to the crew for the job they do in keeping it appealing and pre…

Love this course. It’s always in great shape no matter the time of the year. A must play if you’re in the area and better than any public track in Richmond.

Absolutely beautiful golf course, but very challenging—often listed among the top 20 hardest courses in the US. The "open" links-style layout can be deceptive, and missing the fairways often leads to thick brush and lost balls. The greens are lightning fast, especially in summer, making downhill putts tricky and prone to rolling 30-40 feet with a slight misjudgment. If you typically shoot in the 100s, you might want to play elsewhere to avoid a potentially frustrating experience, as scores can be 5-10 strokes higher than average. Nonetheless, the course's beauty makes it worth the challenge.

I really wanted this course to be better. The course is challenging alot of blind shots and tough holes. Conditions were not the best due to a really dry April so I can't really fault the course on that. But slow play and no rangers checking on pace of play. Also no cart girl or mention of restaraunt or bar closing before we made the turn. Just was hoping for a better experience.

Strantz! Had an amazing time at this course... It is quite challenging, so I would recommend picking the correct tees, even if others in your group are on other tees. The tee shots all look deceptive and challenging, but if you are smart with your shots and not overly aggressive the course can be managed. The pro shop is well stocked, the pub is pretty good with well made Transfusions. Driving range and practice green are both great. I would highly recommend playing here, especially if you like any other Strantz course. Pricing is incredibly fair and borderline a great value.
