In summary

The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse is praised for its unique and challenging Mike Strantz design, offering a memorable layout with diverse holes and stunning natural scenery. The staff is frequently highlighted for their friendliness and professionalism, enhancing the overall experience. However, some visitors have expressed concerns about inconsistent maintenance, particularly regarding overgrown areas and the condition of the greens and tee boxes, which can detract from the otherwise enjoyable golfing experience.

Stonehouse is an incredible golf course — a true Mike Strantz masterpiece. The layout is bold, creative, and unlike anything else in the area. Every hole feels memorable and demands your attention from the first tee to the final putt. The staff were outstanding: friendly, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable. They made the experience even better, and honestly played a big part in why we enjoyed the day so much… we came back the very next day to play it again. This course is only going to get better as it continues to mature. I have no doubt you’ll start seeing Stonehouse earning awards and…

A great layout with lots of interesting, fun holes. A tamer Mike Strantz design, but should absolutely be included in any Williamsburg golf trip. The fairways are usually in great shape, and the greens and tee boxes are usually in fair-to-good shape. But it's never crowded, which is a huge plus.

This was the last public Stranz I had to cross off the list. The most straightforward of his courses (aside from maybe Caledonia) it’s on par in my eyes with Tot Hill (despite the reno over there) but a large step below Tobacco and Caledonia and even a step below Royal New Kent. The course has an interesting history and you can see the current management is working to bring it back to life but there’s lots of overgrowth that can get in the way of tee shots and the periphery of the fairway. It’s also very odd seeing a Stranz course in a housing development for half of the layout. It’s a must…

Was told over the phone it was $70 to play. Get here and it’s $105 because we don’t live in the state. The course hasn’t been mowed in at least 5 days. 4-7in weeds on every tee box and even in some fairways. Fairways are basically rough. I would not play here again. There’s many other courses in the area that are way cheaper and the conditions are premium. For )105 you’d think they could afford to hire someone to cut the grass, which is an essential part of golf course maintenance I thought.

Hate to see this course waste its potential. 80% of the greens are awful and as others have stated the tee boxes are something you’d find at a course charging $20 for 18 holes. For over $100 I’d expect much better conditions. At least mow all the tee boxes? Especially for a tournament. The layout itself is a lot of fun however there’s 0 attention to detail.

Good layout. Not very well maintained. 4 inch weeds on tee boxes, tee box markers vary between 2 black spheres, 2 black stone markers, one of each and one random rock on a tee box (2nd hole). Clumpy grass in most fairways because they haven't been mowed. This course could be so good if it put more emphasis on playing conditions. Many areas of the course hasn't seen a mower in a week. Solid Bermuda greens, but they were slow, around 8 to 8.5.

A wonderful course. A variety of tees for varying skill levels all selected to challenge you from tee to green. The fairways (mostly) offer a large landing area but outside of that you'll encounter rough terrain so place your shots well. The yardage chart provides distance to both the green and 150 markers. Make sure you note the aiming sticks(?) are plain white while the 150 yd markers are black and white. There are LOTS of blind shots. The greens are massive but tightly placed and in great condition with some bare spots but the maintenence crew has done well ensuring the bare spots still rol…

It is amazing to see how much Stonehouse has improved in a short period of time. The course is so unique in that the holes are so spread out that there is only one hole from which you can see another hole. The front nine is all about nature while the back is mostly amongst the beautiful homes. It is a very challenging course with the blind tee sheets and huge greens but fair. This course is inevitably on track to fully regain its previous luster and I would recommend playing it now while you still can.

Nice Mike Stranz designed course down around Williamsburg. Maybe slightly easier than his Royal New Kent course. Lots of hills and elevation changes. Fun, challenging track that either a low or high handicap golfer can enjoy. Would recommend playing here if you're in the Toano, VA area!

WOW! STRANTZ WOULD BE PROUD! Positives: New Owners and Staff have really put this amazing course back on the playlist. Looks and plays like a brand new course! Not one nearing a quarter century. 93F today (6/4/20) and with Covid there's no coolers permitted on the course. Plan well ahead with 2 gallons of water on your cart. Except for Black Tee on 10th (we always play from tips) the boxes, fairways and greens were like a brand new course. Grounds Team were working on rebuilding green collars on 6 & 10. Greens rolled true if a bit slower than most as they are young Bentgrass taking root.…

This food was really fresh. I had the grilled shrimp tacos. The beans and rice were plain, no seasoning, but still fresh. Prices were decent. Its near work. I will eat here again. Friendly staff.
