Balboa Park Municipal Golf Club

A great city run course. Tee times are hard to come by but well worth it if you get them. The course is very challenging. Tight fairways, small greens, and thick rough. Not for the feint of heart. But if you are cool with tossing the scorecard and just having fun a great round of golf is waiting for you. Staff can be a bit prickly and the course can be a bit beat up but it’s kind of understandable given how many people they pump through this course each day. Bucket list kinds of course if you can get on.

Drove 2 hrs from los angeles to catch a 10:56am tee time on a Wednesday. Very beautiful course.. started with a bucket to get warmed up then walked up to start the game. Everything was fine the course is great. The big lawnmowers were out and were very noisy and one of the lawnmower ate my ball 😒 gotta be careful if you're slicing balls theres a section where is close to homes and the street and the fence is low. No extra netting. You can break a window or hit someone. I highly recommend this course. Nice view of the city. Great game. Must do

I’ve played Balboa Park Golf Course many times over the years and, despite its flaws, have referred plenty of friends and family because it’s convenient and affordable. I’ve always tolerated the usual annoyances, but today’s experience was disappointing. I attempted to play the 9-hole course with my girlfriend, who is new to golf. She was mostly coming to walk along with my friend and me, but wanted to hit a few tee and approach shots for practice. Public course owned by the City of San Diego. SD city residents can get a discount card for $25 annually. There are two courses, one is 18 holes while the other is 9 holes. The café serves some pretty good quality food as well.

This was my first time playing this course and it was a great experience. The course was in great condition. The fairways were good, greens were very fast and small, adding to the challenge of this course. The sand was decent. The course was very challenging with a great layout providing lots of elevation change and unique holes. Views of the pacific ocean, San Diego downtown skyline, and Coronado Bridge made for a scenic round of golf. Must play municipal course right in the middle of downtown San Diego.

A great place to play golf near the city without paying high prices.

This City-owned golf course is a public treasure. I was happy to play again on a visit to San Diego, after a 15-year hiatus, and it’s as scenic and challenging as ever. Love the location near downtown, with views of the skyline from many holes. The fairways are tight and there are several holes with strategically placed sand traps, which makes it tough to score well. But the greens fees are very reasonable, especially compared to the City’s more famous course (Torrey Pines). Definitely worth a visit by golf lovers of all ages and skill levels.

Played here the other day for the first time. I was surprised how tight of the fairways there was on every hole. It’s actually quite a difficult course. You probably want to be a >20 hcp At least to even play here because you’ll find yourself if some tough situations with forests around most holes. Easy to lose balls. Greens were playing fast early in the AM so balls would just keep rolling for days. Nice course especially considering it rained three inches in the prior 5-6 days. Some rocks in fairway from runoff on a couple holes...winter rules. Greens were surprisingly fast and were also in great shape. Nice workout walking. Wish it was closer for me.

What a treat to play this course. If you can get on, play it. It's hard to find times being a top-tier SD muni in the same group with Torrey. The only way I could get out was with an SD resident friend who has the resident card. The course is tough even though it's only 6,400 yards from the tips. Some amazing vistas of the San Diego skyline to be enjoyed. Keep your ball in play and you can score. Greens are huge, hard and fast. 4 stars is fair. I've only played two rounds here but both times holes 1-5 & 18 are cart path only which is very annoying. Can get crowded for parking but I found parking both times. Only played the 18 hole course. The conditions were good! Pace of play was decent. There's a lot of danger on this course due to its location. Has views of downtown but if you hook/slice at the wrong time, you will be hitting your ball into traffic. Theres at least 1 uphill green that has a residential neighborhood 10 yards away from it.

Beautiful golf course that is challenging. I’d strongly recommend taking an electric golf cart instead of a push cart if you’re playing 18 holes- due to the various elevations. Keep your head up and eyes open as you will likely hear many people yelling “fore”. I gave it 4 stars due to the pace of place. It took us over 5 hours to complete the round. Each par three had a backup with three groups…but overall it was a great course with a great price!
