What People Say

In summary

Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin is highly regarded for its well-maintained conditions, historical charm, and welcoming atmosphere, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors. The course layout is praised for being both challenging and accessible, with a beautiful setting that includes mature oaks and wildlife. While many appreciate the friendly staff and reasonable rates, some visitors have noted issues with slow pace of play and occasional management oversight, particularly regarding etiquette among younger players.

First time golfing in Austin. Great spot. Came when it was in the 30s so I would love to come back again in spring/summer time.

Great place for a round. Super laid back. Greens, fairways, tee boxes all taken care of nicely. Course is challenging without being super frustrating. Recommend!

The course is in great shape. I used to play here all the time 20 years ago and I have noticed improvements in all aspects, including a staff that is personable and friendly. For years it was run by a bunch of grouches. Lions has been added back to the rotation. (Just wish the range could accommodate woods)

Moderately easy course that is very beginner-friendly, great for last-minute sunset slots during the week! Beautiful space to be outdoors that is tucked away from the noise of the city

Was in town in March 2025 for a conference and had the chance to play this local muni. Tee times go fast but because they don’t have any no-show penalty, the pro shop told us that walkins are usually able to get off the waitlist due to no-shows. The range was not in service so we spent a good amount of time practicing out chipping and putting. The course itself was reasonable and relatively short in distance (especially the par 3s), and there wasn’t much difference between the white and red tees which Nat wasn’t thrilled out. The greens aren’t easy though- most of them were on slopes and had b…

Great course, conditions are good for its price. Clubhouse was flexible and got me in as a single with a three person group.

This review will be positive. Why..? I live across the street and have played this old gal so many times I have lost count. I love this place for the history, the old style layout (designed before golf carts) and the wonderful value, along with the best breakfast taco's I have had the pleasure to enjoy anywhere, at anytime in the history of the world. The driving range, under the oaks that are hundreds of years old, is one of the most pleasant locations to practice in the entire United States. After reading some of the reviews it dawned on me that most golfer's who don't care for the old gal c…

This course is flooded with tarry town teenagers. I’m all for pushing the youth to get into golf, but if they don’t have the proper/super basic golf etiquette then they shouldn’t be here i.e. rushing the group in front of them, running carts into each other, letting their friends ride up to the course on their bikes and jump in front of other groups and play for free. Seems like the staff doesn’t monitor them at all. Other municipal courses in austin are not like this. This is ridiculous. Fairways and greens are in great condition, but players here don’t call fore. Which is super important if…

Solid well maintained course. Crushed it on the front 9 and got to enjoy the scenery. Saw some deer and wildlife. Decent amount of shade you can find throughout the course. It was pretty busy since another local course is closed and overflows to this one. Golf carts are in good condition, and the greens are well maintained. Definitely a cool little course with some challenging and some simple. Oh and the pro shop has some pretty sweet merch too. Will be back!

One of the treasures of old West Austin and a definite selling point in the neighborhood, Lion’s Municipal Golf Course, known as Muny to the locals, is the home of Masters champion golfers like Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite who grew up playing there. Young and old alike enjoy this historical and beautiful golf course in Tarrytown.
