In summary

The Highlands of Elgin is frequently praised for its well-maintained course, challenging yet fair layout, and scenic views, making it a popular choice among golfers in the area. The staff and amenities, including the Grumpy Goat Tavern and practice facilities, receive high marks for their quality and service. However, some visitors have noted issues such as slow greens, inconsistent customer service, and occasional slow pace of play, which could be areas for improvement.

I was excited to play the Highlands because I heard good things about the layout. It’s an open links style course designed by Keith Foster who has a great pedigree of courses. My disappointment wasn’t so much with the design which requires strategic shot making, but with the greens. The weather was finally cooler today but the greens were slower than the worst public muni. I know they want the greens to be accessible to all levels of players, but there’s just no excuse for how slow these greens were today. So all chips and putts were almost always way short and it was difficult to adapt. That…

Very nice course with enough lake, bunkers and huddles. Nicely designed course with lots of up and downs and tricky ones but with limited trees and rough around, you can freely power your shots through. I was bit disappointed when they told me what it costs over phone and when I went there with a buddy of mine, we have to pay 25% more or so. The price offered was only for residence was the answer. Should he not check before saying the price when you call. At least the lady who signed us should have honored but she did not even feel sorry that they did that to us. That was very disappointing

**Review:** I recently had the pleasure of playing a round at Highlands of Elgin on 8/17/24 and I must say, it’s one of the finest courses I've had the opportunity to experience. The layout is challenging yet fair, with well-maintained greens that roll true, and breathtaking views on nearly every hole. The staff was friendly, and the facilities were top-notch, making for an overall enjoyable day on the links. However, the one drawback to an otherwise perfect day was the limited service from the beverage cart. Unfortunately, the cart girl only came by twice during the entire round, which was…

Best course in the area for the money, Hands down. The Course is always in good shape with a lot of risk and reward holes. Hard to get a good time though, and a no refund cancellation policy.. But super cheap so it makes sense.

This course was great. About an hour outside the city but it was worth the drive. It's an impressive construction with some unique and engaging hole designs. I found it to be challenging but fun. The pace of play was quick but not oppressive and we ended up finishing in exactly 4 hours. It is worth a visit.

A True Gem – Our Go-To Course for Years! We've been playing at Highlands of Elgin Golf Course every other Saturday for the past three years, and it never disappoints. The staff is always friendly, professional, and incredibly accommodating, which makes every round enjoyable from start to finish. The course itself is consistently in excellent condition—greens are well maintained, fairways are clean, and the overall layout offers a great mix of challenge and playability. The food is absolutely delicious, and the service is top-notch—efficient, warm, and always welcoming. This place checks ev…

The course was pretty great besides a few quirky holes. Played on an extremely windy day, which made it a very hard course to play as it is links style. The only complaint was all the staff we ran into was rude and unfriendly, almost like we were unwelcome. Kind of a weird feeling for an expensive municipal course, that left a bad taste in my mouth. Probably won’t be back bc of it.

Have had a permanent tee time for years. Love the course, people are all very nice. If you haven’t played it, play it. And then try Bowes Creek also, sister course to the Highlands.

Track’s in great shape. Greens roll true. Great maintenance and interesting layout and routing. Fair price given location. Starter and ranger were remarkably unpleasant.

I love the course and some of the holes are my favorite views in the area but the pace of plaw is awful. The last 2 times I've come here we find ourselves stuck behind groups playing with 6 people or groups taking taking 10 min to look for their ball in the trees. A twighlight round should not take 5.5 hours but nothing is being done to force quick play
