In summary

Skungamaug River Golf Course is appreciated for its friendly staff, reasonable pricing, and a challenging layout that combines tree-lined fairways with smaller greens, offering a classic New England golfing experience. However, some visitors have raised concerns about inconsistent course maintenance, slow pace of play, and perceived unfairness in dress code enforcement, particularly towards women. While many enjoy the course's peaceful setting and value, others feel improvements are needed in course conditions and management practices.

I've been to many golf courses, and I can honestly say I've never had an experience like this before. The course itself was in terrible condition it was muddy unkept, and overall felt dirty and neglected. On top of that, the atmosphere was extremely unwelcoming. What frustrated me the most was the clear double standard with the dress code. When I arrived, I was told AS A WOMEN! to put on a sweatshirt over my outfit, even though there were multiple men on the course wearing t-shirts with no collars and JEANS! I've never been singled out like that at any other golf course, and it felt unfair and…

Great place to get out and play. 18 hole public course with a fantastic little beer tavern to boot. The staff and pro are always very friendly and make accommodations for short notice tee times. The driving range is full grass, which is good and bad depending on who is using it. It would be nice to have a mat area for those who do not play often.

A group of us play here in a charity tournament every June. This is a hidden gem of a course. Well maintained. Clean. Quiet. Friendly staff. If I didnt live 45 minutes away, I would absolutely play here more often. Not too many sand traps. BUT enough water hazards to make up for it. A good mix of wide open fairways with some narrow ones where you MUST hit the fairway.

My favorite course to play in the area, and the pricing is great too! Have spent the majority of my golfing days here — honestly hard to justify going elsewhere.

Pace of play nightmare and the course doesn’t care. Took a foursome 26 minutes to play hole number 4. There were 3 groups backed on the 4th tee waiting, while the group in front of us was waiting in the fairway for this foursome to finish. The group in front of this foursome was putting on hole 6 and they hadn’t even made it to 5. I’ve never once called a pro shop to complain but I did this time. And the owner John had the audacity to come out and just say “oh it’s a busy day, and there is a group in front of them” meanwhile seeing with my own 2 eyes that there was no group in site ahead of th…

Played there in July this year & wasn't very impressed. Fairways , greens weren't great. The cart paths were bumpy as hell. But just played a tournament there a week ago and saw a vast improvement on all of the above. And the beer in the clubhouse is ice cold 🧊 ❄️

Place has so much potential but is owned by an older guy Aka he’s closer to the end so he has zero incentive to spend any money to get this course up to speed. When I found this out it made total sense. I have never in my life had to “re-setup” on a T box as many times as I did playing here because one foot was in a ditch or on a bump. T boxes are terribly unleveled. The course? An actual swamp. Ruined a new pair of shoes because of surprise spots that send you almost ankle deep. No, I’m not an idiot and can spot wet spots but this course has some terrifically hidden ones. My friends and I…

A friend and I came to golf with our sons and a busy Saturday they drive with us and play off our drives . The owner stops us a rushed us along to keep rate of play . We don’t let the boys play the next hole with us a we end up having to wait at the next tee for 2 sets of players . Rushed for no reason terrible experience while getting young golfers into the game . Would not recommend this course especially if you want to introduce kids to the game .

I’m disappointed that I have to write this review but it needs to be done. This course obviously isn’t the nicest but it’s always a good time. However, I have to share my experiences as a woman who has played here dozens of times. The staff is EXTREMELY sexist. I have been asked if I know how to drive a golf cart and how to read the cart signs multiple times when checking in. All those times, the men in line in front of me were never asked. Some of my other female friends have experienced this as well. One time the guy behind the desk asked if she knew how to read the cart signs while her boyf…
