In summary

Poplar Forest Golf Course is frequently praised for being beginner-friendly, offering a welcoming environment for new golfers, and providing a well-maintained driving range with good practice facilities. The staff is often described as friendly and helpful, contributing to a positive experience for many visitors. However, some criticisms include slow pace of play, course overbooking, and varying conditions of the fairways and greens, which can detract from the overall experience for more seasoned players.

My boyfriend, his friends, and I visited this golf course to enjoy the nice weather and spend some time golfing. As a beginner, I am still learning the game and naturally play at a slower pace. The course advertised itself as beginner-friendly, but unfortunately, that was not the experience I had. While we were playing, an employee drove over to us and stated, "There is no time for a golf lesson; you need to take this elsewhere." I found this comment unnecessary and disrespectful. I was simply trying to learn and enjoy the game like any other paying customer. As I walked over to retrieve my go…

I’m extremely new to golf, and being 34 I was decently nervous to start. Called up the shop, asked if they possibly had clubs I could use, then explained I’m a lefty as well. Clubhouse guy said he had a lefty set for me to use, and a large bucket of balls was 10 bucks. Had an amazing time, and honestly everyone was super friendly and helpful. As a new player, and someone who’s trying to figure it out, I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start.

The fairways and greens were in horrible shape for full price. They over booked the tee times so the course became backed up. Marshall came and yelled at our foursome of women for taking too long . We let several people play through. Yelled at us asecond time when there was no one behind us. Would not recommend.

This is a beautiful and fun place to come for a round of golf. Easy to access and inexpensive. These 9 holes sit just across the lake from Thomas Jefferson's estate. Driving range is easy to use. Large bucket $10

What a great course. The whole facility has everything you could possibly need and it is a wonderful course for new players learning the sport. Everything from calling in to get a tee time set up to using the driving range went very smoothly! Definitely enjoyed my time here.

I can see why some people would leave a low review, and Poplar isn't worth 5 stars in some aspects for sure, but the negativity from more experienced golfers is unfair and I am writing this to simply cancel out at least one of them (you'll know who you are). My first round of golf ever was at Poplar and for beginners it is the best place to go. As some people have said it has gone up in price, but still the cheapest option. Disagree with negativity on the greens and fairways as I always think those are decent. Is the range in rough shape? Sure. But it is also the MOST heavily used range in al…

The fact that this course charges FULL PRICE for a non player to ride is just crazy. You can’t get a round of 9 in under 3 hours here because of how they manage t times and have no starter. If you enjoy golf even at a slower pace don’t play here. My experience playing has been so up and down.

Best experience for the price in the Lynchburg area. Range with 250+ yards is fantastic and very reasonably priced buckets

Editing down my 4 star review from 2022. It seems like the prices continue to go up and the conditions get worse. It can be extremely backed up in-season here as well. Their membership also went up by $100 and nothing was added or improved. I’ve played Colonial Hills several times lately and prefer to pay $1 extra after 2pm for better conditions and fewer crowds. This used to be a great budget option but I just don’t see it that way anymore. Here’s how it compares to other city’s budget course to play 9 on a Saturday. Roanoke: $20 Farmville: $24 Salem: $12 (walking) Poplar: $30

A 9 hole course that has good greens. It gets rather packed and there can be a bit of a wait. There are several holes that you cannot see your second shot. However, the price is great $25, the driving range is the best with great targets, the staff is congenial.
